Petunia 'Petty' Ducksworth
Petunia Elanore Ducksworth, often called “Petty,” is the only daughter of the late Christopher Ducksworth, the kindly retail magnate-cum-philanthropist, best known for his independent foreign assistance programs leveraging his knowledge from his roots selling shoes to aid in building industry and providing inexpensive clothing and footwear to the low and no-income families in these developing areas. After losing her father to a vague incident at a manufacturing facility, her mother eventually re-married the universally reviled Reginald Koch, of Koch-Bites Miniature Cigarettes for Children* fame. (*usually South American) Reginald was a poor-tempered man who drove Petty’s mother Rose to substance abuse that eventually left her comatose and hospital-bound.
Her true parents out of the picture, Petunia was sent to study at the Seymore Des Peres Boarding School for Girls. There, much like her father before her, Petty bonded with servant-class staff. While her education was formal and strict in both books and social graces, she managed often to sneak down to the kitchen and commiserate with Maurice the chef who was always trying some new sweet for her to try; or the garden to critique Jorge the overworked topiary expert on his latest attempts to sneak perversions into the shrubberies under the headmistress’ upturned nose.
In fact, Petty was quite good at sneaking and listening unseen, having spent her whole life avoiding the excruciating scrutiny of coming from wealth. It seemed everyone had an opinion on how she should act and who she should become and Petty wanted none of it. If anything she just wanted her own pony named Pickles to ride alone through a field and escape the monotony of her forcefully structured life.
Perhaps from stress, perhaps something else, recently Petunia has begun hearing voices just in her head. Or, well, one voice. It’s not constant, but occasionally it whispers to her: sometimes instructions, sometimes judgements, sometimes simple observation. Yet another outside opinion.
And with the voice, a new skill. She… manipulates things. Not in the social way like she’d been practicing her whole lift, but physically and using her mind. So far it only seemed to manifest under duress, but it was a curiosity to be explored.
